Sir Mortimer Wheeler described archaeology as a scientific art, but today it would probably be more accurate to describe it as an artistic science.
This book traces the growth of archaeology from the development of early archaeological techniques, when exciting remains of some of the world's greatest civilisations were discovered, to the sophisticated discipline it is today. It shows how modern-day techniques are constantly adding detail to our knowledge of the past.
The debt we owe to the work of the major pioneers, many of whom were amateurs, is acknowledged.
These gentlemen archaeologists made some of the greatest discoveries for it is only with the nineteenth century that a more academic approach entered the field and it is not until the dawn of the twentieth century that we see the emergence of the professional archaeologist.
The author surveys the information which archaeology has discovered about the world, from finds in Africa which have given us clues to man's evolution, to his monumental achievements in ancient Greece and throughout the Roman Empire. The advanced civilisations of Egypt, India, China, Japan and Middle America are vividly described through the evidence archaeology has been able to provide.
The book will be useful as a history of archaeology as well as a handbook for today's amateur field and 'dirt' archaeologist. It features 48 pages of colour photographs, as well as many additional black and white illustrations.
Michael Carter has led several archaeological expeditions and has travelled widely throughout Europe, the Middle East, India and the Far East. Vissza
