HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
The following symbols have been used on
the maps and plans which accompany the
text:
- The capital letters A - S define the
functional units of the palace and the most
important buildings around it.
- The numbers 1 - 48 identify the most
important rooms or areas of the palace and
of the houses that are nearest to it.
Most of the names of the various areas
were established by the archaeologist, Sir
Arthur Evans and are
conventional, not always
corresponding to their actual
function. However, they have
been used here for the sake of
consistency with other texts
and with the indicative signs
within the archaeological site.
The areas of the palace which
are closed for reasons of safety
and protection are accessible
only to scholars and
researchers having obtained
special permission from the Directorate of
the Archaeological Services in Herakleion.
The closed areas around the palace can
only be seen by visitors accompanied by
the responsible custodian and guide.
The route which is suggested here for
visiting the palace and the surrounding-
houses takes approximately two hours. To
visit the outlying areas, a further hour and
the use of a car are necessary.
