THE THEATRE AND ITS DOUBLE
Antonin Artaud
Translated by Victor Corti
This collection of essays remains the most radical text on performance in print today. This volume contains the famous Manifestos of the Theatre of Cruelty and the définitions of this theatre; the underlying impulses of performance (described by Artaud as its 'metaphysics'); some suggestions on a physical training method for actors and adresses; a long appréciation of the expressive values of Eastern dance drama. Also included is Seraphim's Theatre, in which Artaud attempts an actor's application of the Taoist principles of fullness and emptiness. To say that this text has been used as basic working material by Peter Brook and the Royal Shakespeare Company, by Grotowski's company in Poland and by the Living Theatre, gives some idea of its past influence. It is widely read throughout the world as a source of inspiration for new drama, for those in search of the meaning of the theatre, as well as for the beauty... Tovább
