men, except the Indians; and if they were governed by one
man, or acted in concert, they would, in my opinion, be invin-

HERODOTUS
Professor Hristo Danov, the well-known Bulgarian scholar,
was born in Plovdiv, Philippopolis in Antiquity. He graduated
in ancient history and classical languages from the University
of Vienna, where he also got his doctor's degree under Profes-
sor Adolf Wilhelm.
From the very beginningProfessor Danovconcentrated on the
study of the history of the Greek colonies along the Black Sea
coast, about which he wrote a number of studies. After the se-
cond World War he published his books The Western Coast
of the Black Sea in Antiquity, Sofia, 1947 and Pontos
Euxeinos, Stuttgart, 1962, and in 1968 his major work An-
cient Thrace, Sofia. An enlarged edition of the same book
was published by Walter de Gruyter, Berlin - New York,
1976. Professor Danov obtained his second D.Hist. at
Leningrad University for his work Ancient Thrace. He is
now working on the second part of Ancient Thrace which
covers a period of history down to the Late Antiquity.
Before his retirement Professor Danov was Head of the Chair
of Ancient and Medieval History at Clement of Ohrid Univer-
sity, Sofia. His name is widely known among scholars of an-
cient history all over the world. He has contributed articles to
a number of West European encyclopaedias on ancient histo-
ry, not only on the history and historical geography of An-
cient Thrace and the Black Sea, but also on the ancient hi-
story of the Northern Balkan Peninsula, Southern Russia,
Yugoslavia, Romania and part of Western Asia Minor.
Antique Tombs in Bulgaria offers the reader in colour photo-
graphs the most interesting finds of Antiquity, of all that have
so far come to light in our country.Professor Danov has more
than once visited Greece and Turkey in connection with his
studies, and has specialized in Great Britain, France, Italy
and Greece. Vissza
