The Print
For decades, Ansel Adams' photographic prints have been the standard against which all others have been measured. In The Print, Book 3 of The New Ansel Adams Photography Series, Adams completes his statement on the philosophy and craft of creative black-and-white image making.
Building on the information presented in Books 1 and 2 of the series, The Camera and The Negative, Adams shows how the making of a fine print is the culmination of the creative process. Central to this is his concept of "visualization," in which the photographer "sees" the final image before taking the photograph.
In The Print, Adams explains how this initial visual concept can be further refined or modified during the stages of printing, since the negative is still only a potential image,- as Adams says in his favorite analogy to music, "the negative is the score, and the print is the performance." Hence the importance, and the creativity, of the printing process, which is fully explored in this volume.
The technical information is clear and concise, starting with the basics—designing and furnishing the darkroom and making the first print—and proceeding to the most advanced methods for achieving a fine print, such as developer modifications, toning and bleaching, and subtle buming and dodging. The text includes sections on the finishing and display of prints, processing for archival quality, and sensitometry. A chapter on special applications covers high-volume printing, the making of very large prints, and printing for reproduction. Appendixes give information on chemical formulas and test data. The book is amply illustrated with many of Ansel Adams' most famous photographs, as well as with technical illustrations.
This new edition of The Print has been completely revised and rewritten to include up-to-date materials and techniques. With its publication, The New Ansel Adams Photography Series on black-and-white photography is complete, and is certain to become the standard reference work in the field, essential to the beginning student and skilled photographer alike.
