Scientists who have changed the world
Orville Wright was in the. air for only twelve seconds and covered only 120 feet. But those twelve seconds in the air made him the first person to fly a heavier-than-air machine, a full-sized airplane that could be controlled by its pilot.
As children in the American Midwest, Wilbur and Orville Wright were fascinated by the toys they called Chinese flying tops-powered through the air by a rubber band. Later, in their Wright Cycle Company shop, Wilbur found himself twisting an inner tűbe box and the beginnings of controlled flight were born in his mind.
The two brothers worked and experimented with their ideas. They were inspired by others and defeated by the elements. But, in the end, they succeeded. On December 17, 1903 the beginnings of flight were mastered. Nearly ninety years later the whole world has been affected by the speed at which goods and people can travel. The Wrights1 mastery of flight changed the world.
