From the dramatic coastline and rolling hills of the north to the grey-green olive groves and whitewashed villages of the south, Spain is a land of contrasts, its history embracing the influences of Rome, Islam, the Habsburg and Bourbon monarchies. With over 400 colour photographs this lavish visual portrait of Spain explores the diversity of the country through its varied landscapes, its vivid colours, its decorative heritage and architecture.
Fifteen interiors have been selected and photographed to give an impression of the diversity of national Ufestyles, ranging from quiet MaUorcan villas and simple farm cottages to Moorish palaces and country estates in Galicia. Delicate wrought-iron balconies and iridescent tile patterns, robustly carved chests or barguenos and heavy wooden shutters are indelible images that characterise the Spanish way of living. In a country where the light and heat indulge an outdoor existence the patio and the garden become natural extensions of the home. In the south the gardens are built on Moorish foundations, full of colour, shade and murmuring fountains, while the arid avenues of olives and lavender are typical of Castile, and moss-covered granite and verdant Baroque terraces characterise the north.
From whitewashed simplicity to decorative extravagance, from the Baroque to the Modernismo movement, Spain constructs an evocative portrait of a country that has created its own vital cultural influence whilst maintaining traditions rooted in past centuries.
