The Phaidon Guide to Furniture provides a lively and inventively organized survey of the techniques and styles of world furniture. It is comprehensive, covering furniture throughout the world from ancient times to the present. The book is • written for ail those who are interested in furiture, be they beginners who want an introduction to world furniture, or experts in a particular subject who wish to broaden and extend their knowledge.
The book is divided into two parts. The first, an introductory section, takes a practical approach, describing the materials and techniques used from the earliest times. Wood, and less common materials such as metais, glass, cane, bamboo, and stone, as well as the tools used to work them, are described in detail, as are the techniques and materials used to decorate the furniture. There is a useful section on how to recognize and avoid fakes, reproductions, and copies.
The second part of the book forms the guide itself. Organized chronologically and thematically, it describes the stylistic development of furniture, from the ancient world to the present decade. It shows how and why different shapes developed and were modified, and it describes the work of many important designers. It also provides some fascinating insights into why particular societies produced the furniture they did.
Of particular note are the ten full pages of drawings illustrating the main features of ail the important styles. These help to identify a style at a glance. For handy reference, there is a directory of ail the major furniture makers and designers.
With its unique combination of practical and stylistic information, this is a book that will be constantly referred to.
