Andreas loannou was born in Paphos, on the
Island of Cyprus, in 1918. He died in Athens on
the 2nd of August 1972. The manuscript of
this work had been completed shortly before
his sudden and untimely death. He studied
law at the University of Athens and attended
postgraduate courses in political science at the
Universities of London and Chicago. From
the latter he received the degree of Doctor
of Political Science. During the 2nd World War
he served as a volunteer. He took part in
the Resistance and was imprisoned by the
Germans. For 16 years he acted as Prefect,
on the Islands of Samos, of the Dodecanese, of
Zakynthos, and elsewhere. He was a member of
the Society of Greek Men of Letters. Andreas
loannou was the founder of the Art Gallery
of Rhodes. He also helped in the organization
of the Art Gallery of Salonica, and contributed
to the enrichment of the Gallery of Patras. In

In this capacity, his creative imagination and

contemporary Greek artists. His widely rang-
ing interests included literature, Byzantine
Archaeology, and History of Art, and he pub-
