AN INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING
by
Niall Lothian (Professor, Edinburgh Business School) and
John Small (Professor Emeritus, Heriot-Watt University)
To be successful, lawyers today must be able to give more than just legal advice. They must also be able to understand their clients' business priorities and to provide advice that takes them into account. They must be able to make informed judgements about the financial strength or weakness of companies and to see through a variety of financial stratagems designed to disguise the true state of affairs.
This book supports and provides background material for the Academy's Financial Accounting course. It will help lawyers understand the intricacies of the Profit and Loss Account; the Balance Sheet; the Cash Flow Statement; the framework and interpretation of Financial Report; and the basis for a variety of investment decisions.
Throughout the aim is to demystify accounting concepts and to get to the reality behind accounting jargon. With the help of this book and the course which It supports, lawyers should feel more able to assess the value of the advice provided by their corporate advisers and to use accounting information more effectively as a tool in assessing competitive advantage and financial performance. Clifford Chance thanks both the authors and the Edinburgh Business School for their permission to reproduce the contents of this book.
