This is the winner of the competition, run in conjunction with the Priváté Eye Writers of America, for the Best First Pl Növel. In the hallowed traditions of Chandler and Hammett, Les Roberts has created an entirely credible and very contemporary investigator, Saxon. Watching his ficus expire slowly in his apartment one evening, Saxon is disturbed by a call from his secretary informing him her husband has just dodged a buliét. This cry for help leads him to the home of Buck Weldon, hard-drinking, hard-hitting, best-selling mystery writer, where he learns that the buliét was probably aimed at Weldon and it wasn't the first attempt at violence towards the writer. He alsó meets Weldon's vulnerable but beautiful daughter. Saxon agrees to investigate the source of these attacks and before unravelling a tortuous skein of conflicting egos, becomes involved in the world of academia, the selfish greed of Hollywood and the subculture of drugs.
