This volume is part of a new series of translations of Ibsen's
plays which will be the first comprehensive translation of the
great Norwegian playwright in over fifty years. Working from the
original manuscripts, Mr. McFarlane has compiled a docu-
mented record of Ibsen's progress, from the earliest notes, to
the draft material, to the finished version. The earlier drafts and
notes, so valuable for an intimate understanding of the creative
processes of the playwright, appear after the final text of each
of the three plays. An Appendix includes reports on the reac-
