WILLIAM L. LANGER
This is a thoroughly new edition of one of
the world's most famous reference works.
More than a million copies have been sold
of the first three editions, the last of which
appeared in 1952. The book has now been
drastically revised and completely reset to
incorporate the latest findings of historical
research.
The entire section on prehistory and the
earliest civilizations has been rewritten in
the light of recent historical and archeo-
logical research. Events of the twentieth
century have been re-examined from a van-
tage point not previously attainable, and
the significance of persons and movements
has been reappraised. Professor Langer has
not hesitated to reject material from earlier
editions that was in any way outdated.
Aware of changes in historical perspective,
he has seen the necessity for a considerable
expansion of the treatment of art, literature
and the other cultural concerns of man. Not

WILLIAM L. LANGER
This is a thoroughly new edition of one of
the world's most famous reference works.
More than a million copies have been sold
of the first three editions, the last of which
appeared in 1952. The book has now been
drastically revised and completely reset to
incorporate the latest findings of historical
research.
The entire section on prehistory and the
earliest civilizations has been rewritten in
the light of recent historical and archeo-
logical research. Events of the twentieth
century have been re-examined from a van-
tage point not previously attainable, and
the significance of persons and movements
has been reappraised. Professor Langer has
not hesitated to reject material from earlier
editions that was in any way outdated.
Aware of changes in historical perspective,
he has seen the necessity for a considerable
expansion of the treatment of art, literature
and the other cultural concerns of man. Not
only has the text been brought up to date
but its many maps and genealogical tables
have also been redone.
In all of this, though maintaining per-
sonal supervision of everything that has
gone into the book, Professor Langer has
been assisted by many distinguished schol-
ars in the various fields concerned. By a
miracle of arrangement and condensation
they have succeeded in putting all history
from the Paleolithic Period to the Kennedy
years in one chronologically arranged vol-
continued on back flap
continued from front flap
ume. An extraordinarily detailed index, it-
self close to 200 pages in length, brings
that history within reach of the reader's
fingertips.
The section on the modern world deals
fully with the beginnings of our own age,
and events that have occurred since 1900
are covered in great detail. Nowhere else
can be found so concise and convenient a
summary of the past, essential for a proper
understanding of the present. Here are the
movements and the leaders, the victories
and the defeats, the great events and the
small that have shaped the world. Here too
are summaries of the cultural activities, the
scientific progress and the social movements
that have made our civilization.
An Encyclopedia of World History is the
most complete and up-to-date survey of
world history available in any language. In
terse yet authoritative form, it presents the
narrative of man's life on this planet.
William Leonard Langer, Coolidge Pro-
fessor of History (Emeritus) at Harvard,
