PAUL VALÉRY An Anthology
Selected, with an introduction by James R. Lawler
The prose and poetry in this anthology are drawn from the Collected Worits of Paul Valéry, edited by Jackson Mathews (Bollingen Series XLV). They provide the English-speaking reader with an introduction to Valéry's work, suggesting the diverse genius of a writer who, in the words of T. S. Eliot, "will remain for posterity the representative poet of the first half of the twentieth century."
James R. Lawler's elegant introduction deals with Valéry's concerns and his influence, and also with critical interpretations of his work. The volume begins with "The Evening with Monsieur Teste" (1896), from the famous "anti-novel" Monsieur Teste. It includes such notable essays as "The Introduction to the Method of Leonardo da Vinci," "The Crisis of the Mind," and "Poetry and Abstract Thought."

Paul Valéry (1871—1945) was one of the major poets of the twentieth century, and he also excelled as literary critic and observer of politics and society. Princeton University Press now makes available in a new and attractive paperback format several volumes of its celebrated series, the Collected Works of Paul Valéry—works that retain their critical power and their appeal for those who, in Valéry's own words, are "free to doubt whatever is doubtful and to maintain what is not."
