AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Amnesty International puts three simple questions to governments the world over: > Will you free the prisoners of conscience incarcerated in your jails? None of them has used or advocated violence. Each is being punished solely for expressing his or her political and religious beliefs. - > Will you give your political prisoners fair and prompt trials? In nation after nation, people held in political cases are in detention without being allowed to defend themselves in a fair trial. - > Will you stop the torture and killing of prisoners? Brutal torture and ill-treatment have been practised in the 1980s by one out of every three governments. The death penalty is in force in some 130 countries, and the taking of life by the state in executions and political killings continues. Covering over 125 countries, this report outlines the answers Amnesty International has received to these questions and the impartial research it has conducted into human rights violations...
