PENGUIN CLASSICS
Henry Fielding
Amelia
EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID BLEWETT
Amelia, Fielding's last novel, represents a move away from the comic style of his earlier works towards a more subtle analysis of contemporary social ills.
As a magistrate at the Bow Street Court, Fielding was no stranger to human misery. In Amelia his awareness of
official indifference and institutionalized injustice combines naturally with his gift as a satirist to give the most realistic - and potentially tragic - portrait of London life to be found in any of his works. The menacing atmosphere present in the book, the author's pessimism and the recognition that virtue does not always have its reward are the culmination of Fielding's urge to expose the social evils of his day. Amelia, the victim of public corruption and domestic instability, plays Desdemona to her husband's Othello. With Shakespeare's play echoing in
the mind of the reader — reinforced by the theme of concealment and disguise — a happy outcome is no longer guaranteed. This move towards a new realism was a risk for Fielding, but in taking it he extended the parameters of
the English novel.
