Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the sixth child of a Norfolk farmer's family of ten. Allan Quatermain, Jess and She followed in quick succession, and romances of adventure continued to flow from his pen throughout his life, despite personal losses and tragedy. Not content with his knowledge of Africa, he journeyed to Egypt, Iceland and Mexico for bacKground for his books. He farmed his own estate in Norfolk and wrote an agricultural survey of England. He gave his friend Rudyard Kipling the idea for The Jungle Book, and campaigned on behalf of the Salvation Army—indeed a many-sided man.
About this boob
When Allan Quatermain, Sir Henry Curtis and Commander Good set sail for Lamu, their objective was Mt. Lekakisera and the Africa beyond it, where, to the best of Quatermain's belief, no white man had ever been—unless that rumour of a great white race lost centuries before in that unknown interior should prove true.
