In this greatly expanded version of his acclaimed BBG television series, Alistair Cooke takes the story of the USA from before its discovery by Columbus to the present day. The book's qualities are those of Alistair Cooke's own writing: wonderfully readable, and again and again bringing into a fresh perspective events one thought one knew all about. His portraits of the men who left their mark on the country —the politicians, the bankers and tycoons, the generals, the sodbusters, and the immigrants—are masterly. He writes about the land and the people with the dispassionate but affectionate perceptiveness that listeners to his Letter from America broadcasts have become addicted to. It is a book to be read for itself; it presupposes no knowledge of the American background, but anyone who reads it will have laid the foundations of an understanding of the currents that have affected the course of American history.

The book is lavishly illustrated in colour and black and white, with paintings, photographs and drawings which supplement the story.
The author, Alistair Cooke, was born in Manchester on 20 November 1908. He first went to America in 1932 to do graduate work at Yale and Harvard. He returned to England in 1934 to become the BBC's film critic, but went back to the United States in 1937 to begin a long career which in time established him as the foremost expert on American affairs in the British press. He first wrote for The Times, but in 1945 he joined the Manchester Guardian as its United Nations correspondent, and in 1948 became the Guardians, Chief American Correspondent, a post from which he retired in 1972. Since 1946, he has broadcast his weekly Letter from America for the BBC. It is now the longest-running single programme in broadcasting history. He became an American citizen in 1941 and is married to the painter Jane White.
