The raft had been made by Ian's old-er brother out of somé oil drums and an old door. But then Colin broke his ankle: and it rained and rained so that he was worried lest the raft had been swept from its mooring by the river in flood. Ian and his friend Terry de-cided to go down to the river to see if the raft was still there. It was, but only just, and it was clear that a second line from the raft to a tree on the bank was essential if the raft were to be made safe—and this meant one of the boys clambering out along a branch and getting on to the raft.
The trouble was, Ian was scared stiíí of water, and Terry—well, Terry had been born with arms only a few inches long (which was why someone at school had rather cruelly nicknamed him Mole). As it happened Terry's courage made his physical disability less of a handicap than Ian's psycho-logical disability: but each boy learned something about the other and about compassion as... Tovább
