Alcohol is readily available, ^nd drugs are increasingly becoming more available. Substance abuse has long spilled over from margirialised groups intö the mainstream. lt has reached the workplace as a sizeable problem to be reckoned with. Management and workers have to learn to confront the issue in a ratiónal manner. They can no longer ignore or suppress the problem - they have to manage it. And because of this, what once was the problem of law enforcement and health authorities has now become an issue of relevance to workers and employers.
This is the background and the reason for the ILO's increasing involvement in promoting policies and programmes aimed at preventing and reducing drug and alcohol problems in the workplace.
The positive impact of these programmes for business and benefits to the community is also in line with ICAA's overall objectives in the prevention and treatment of alcoholism and drug dependence.
