corrupted the powerful Blackfoot Indians and
cattle ranching replaced herds of roaming
buffalo.

province's extraordinary historic parks and many
festivals, whose cultural roots represent nations
the world over. Calgary's annual Stampede —
the world's largest rodeo show — and
Edmonton's Klondike Days — a two-week-long
celebration of the gold-rush days — attract
international attention. This colorful past meets
a thriving present in Alberta's two major cities:
Edmonton to the north, the province's capital,
and Calgary to the south, the site for the 1988
