Alarms and
Diversions
The world has been a more solemn place since
James Thurber died in 1961. Great humorists defy
description: no formula on the label can quite
define Thurber's particular brand of tonic, and a
sample only hints at his qualities. Here, for
instance, is his favourite memory of the rousing
old French paperback'Westerns':
Two strangers had turned up in a small Western
town and their actions had aroused the suspicions
of a group of respectable citizens, who forthwith
called on the sheriff to complain about the
newcomers. The sheriff listened gravely for a
while, got up and buckled on his gun belt, and
said,1Alors,je vais demander leurs cartes
d'id en titer
Alarms and Diversions contains a wealth of visual
Thurber, including A New Natural History of
specimens from his mental zoo, and The Race of
Life, in which the boneless gusto of a feather-
fingered family is momentarily checked before the
awful presence of the Enormous Rabbit. In
