There are twenty-five other time-honored mottoes here, illustrated by two of the finest artists and written by one of the most popular of nineteenth century adapters of children's fairy tales. Joseph Jacobs wrote this book in 1889. In the fourth century, B.C., the first collection of tales attributed to Aesop appeared. Though various attempts were made in ancient times to establish Aesop as an actual personage, he is almost certainly a legendary figure. He has been said to be a slave as well as a royal advisor. His illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass gained him international fame.
