In the early 1980s the world's air forces have attained a peak that a few years ago could only have been anticipated. New aircraft types have arrived on the scene in growing numbers, and are already prolifer-ating into markedly improved versions, while older aircraft are being upgraded constantly with new en-gines, sensors and armaments, and are taking on new roles with the aid of more advanced weapons.
The hardware, which encompasses the astronomi-cally expensive as well as the cheap light pláne fitted with limited but effective armament, is only part of the story.
