Edited by Peter Aggleton, Peter Davies and Graham Hart
The strength of this book lies in its immediacy to a rapidly
evolving HIV/AIDS field. Each year, the Editors produce a highly
successful collection of articles selected from the annual Social
Aspects of AIDS conference. Focusing on the most pressing
social themes of the day, these books represent the most up-to-
date account of HIV/AIDS research on the market.
Like its predecessors, AIDS: Rights, Risk and Reason contains a
mix of papers from both researchers and theorists, linking
research with the development of theoretical frameworks in a
readable and thought-provoking way. Issues examined include:
perceptions of risk and risk-taking behaviour; rights and
responsibilities; and the rationality that underpins individual and
collective responses to HIV/AIDS. While the book makes a
valuable reference resource for the busy reader, it is perfiaps in

the juxtaposing of different issues, and the different styles and
approaches that have developed from them, that it proves its real
worth.
The Social Aspects of AIDS series is founded on the firm belief
that a collaboration between medicine and the social sciences is
required to hasten the development of effective means to prevent
and treat HIV infection. As AIDS enters its second decade,
individuals from each field are under increasing pressure to learn
about each other's work. This book is an excellent place to start.
Peter Aggleton is Director of the Health and Education Research
Unit at Goldsmiths' College, University of London. Peter Davies
is Lecturer in Sociology at Essex University. Graham Hart is
Lecturer in Medical Sociology at University College and
Middlesex School of Medicine, London.
