Előszó

Foreword This volume contains the proceedings of the third Thule International Symposium. Its subject is Aging of Connective and Skeletal Tissue-in compliance with the decision of the Skandia Group to devote a number of symposia to gerontologic topics. The titles of the previous publications from the Thule International Symposia are Stroke (1967) and Cancer and Aging (1968). Copies can be obtained from Nordiska Bokhandelns Förlag, Fack, S-101 10 Stockholm 1, Sweden. The third symposium was held in Stockholm on October 1-3, 1968, and a representative group of scientists from basic sciences and clinical research were invited to present their studies on connective and skeletal tissue with special reference to the process of aging. In this book, the structure and metabolic background as well as the physical properties of the various components of the connective and skeletal tissues under normál and pathological conditions will be found thoroughly elucidated just as the clinical aspects are comprehensively analysed by prominentclinicians. The epidemiology of fractures and osteoarthrosis is profitably discussed, particularly in relation to old age. The presentation of metabolic errors of fibrous tissues illustrates how valuable these experiments of nature itself really are for the understanding of the biochemistry and metabolism of the connective tissue and the bone system. The symposium pays much attention to chemical and physical processes as instrumental in aging. How these processes are now brought down for study at the molecular level is well clarified. We are very much indebted to all the participants and observers at this third Thule International Symposium. We hope that their valuable contributions to this publication will obtain a wide spreading, stimulating research and clinical medicine and making this volume a much used reference book on Aging of Connective and Skeletal Tissue.
