She created the character of Hercule Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles (now a PAN Book) that caused no stir when it was first published in 1920; he has become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes. The wife of a distinguished archaeologist (Professor Max Mallowan of London University), Agatha Christie assists him in his excavations in Iraq, where he has made remarkable discoveries.
