This Hungarian A nthol-
ogy, the most extensive
work of its kind in Eng-
lish, is the result of sever-
al years and many long
hours of labor and col-
laboration for its two
translators. The first edi-
tion appeared in 1963 and
promptly sold out. The
translators have now en-
larged and revised the first
edition by deleting four
poets and a few poems
and by adding nearly
thirty poems for twentyf o -
ur new poets and approx-
imately another thirty
poems for seventeen poets
who were represented by
one or more poems in the
first edition. In all, this
edition contains the work
of eighty-three poets and
approximately three hun-
dred poems and eight
thousand lines of Hunga-
rian poetry in translation.
It is hoped that this
Hungarian Anthology will
serve two purposes. For
the uninitiated English
reader it should serve as
some introduction to the
scope, vigor, and vitality
of the poets of Hungary.
For the bilingual Magyar
reader it should be a wel-

About the translators:
Joseph Grosz was born
on November 17, 1893 in
Kupa, Abauj County,
Hungary, the son of a
farmer. He studied at
gymnasia in Kassa, Deb-
recen, Szatmar, The
Wiener Handelsakedemie
Hochschule in Vienna,
Austria. After the First
World War he settled as
a farmer in Austria, later
moving to the United
States in 1939 where he
engaged in dairyfarming.
W. Arthur Boggs was
born in Los Angeles, Cali-
fornia on December 4,
1916. He received hisB.A.
from the University of So-
uthern California in 1939
and his M.A, from the
same university in 1941.
In 1950 he was gran-
ted a Ph. D. in Eng-
lish from the University
of California, Berkeley.
Since 1950 he has been
associated with Portland
State College where he is
presently Professor of
English and Graduate
Advisor for the Division
of Arts and Letters.
