Fülszöveg

This edited volume describes current attempts to understand and to develop database
programming languages. Earlier efforts to combine database and programming-language
technologies involved coupling one system with another (such as SQL embedded in C) or
combining functionalities in one system (as in Pascal R). The most recent work, on which
this book focuses, develops integrated systems from a new, integrated technology. It shows,
for example, how large knowledge-based systems, using this new technology, provide a
uniform way of programming, storing, and managing data.
The editors, drawing from a meeting held in Roscoff, France, have included in this volume
contributions by many of the world's leading researchers and implementors of database
programming languages. The book, like the meeting itself, addresses common interests

The editors, drawing from a meeting held in Roscoff, France, have included in this volume
contributions by many of the world's leading researchers and implementors of database
programming languages. The book, like the meeting itself, addresses common interests
across several areas of computer science: database systems, programming languages, soft-
ware engineering, and logic programming. In addition to the research community, software
developers contemplating the use of a new language or database system will find much useful
information in this collection. There is a growing number of commercially available database
programming languages, and several chapters compare these new systems to more tradi-
tional systems.
Chapters are grouped into five parts:
• Types and Inheritance • Object-oriented Systems and Persistence
• Implementation Issues • Logic
• Database Programming Languages
About the Editors
François Bancilhon received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1976 and his These
d'Etat from the University of Paris in 1980. He worked as a researcher at INRIA on the theo-
retical aspects of databases from 1976 to 1980. From 1980 to 1984, he was a Professor at the
University of Paris XI, where he worked on database machines. He then spent two years with
MCC, working on deductive database systems and database languages. He is now manager
of the Altair project, which is developing an object-oriented database system.
Peter Buneman received his undergraduate degree from Cambridge and his doctorate in
Mathematics from the University of Warwick in 1972 and was subsequently a lecturer at the
University of Edinburgh. His early work was on
combinatorics and parallel adaptive networks.
Since joining the University of Pennsylvania in
1975, he has worked on various aspects of data-
bases. His recent work has been directed towards
improving the interfaces between databases and
programming languages.
