Because of the excitement of new ACE inhibitors reaching the
market with their increasing range of potentials and applica-
tions for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure and other
aspects of cardiovascular disease, there is a need for a useful,
practical overview for the prescribing clinician.
Michael Schachter has asked a team of specialists of inter-
national repute to give a critically aware and well-balanced
assessment of the current issues and future role of ACE
inhibitors in their areas of expertise. With over 1500 refer-
ences, ACE Inhibitors: Current Use and Future Prospects is an
authoritative and indispensable addition to the library of all
clinicians in cardiology and pharmacology.
The background to the renin-angiotensin system and cardio-

fundamental research and clinical perspectives. The pro-

generally the emphasis is clinical.
renin-angiotensin system: physiology and pathophysiology
basic cardiovasular pharmacology of ACE inhibitors
ACE inhibitors in hypertension
ACE inhibitors in renal and renovascular disease
ACE inhibitors in the management of cardiac failure
the use of ACE inhibitors in blacks and whites
adverse reactions to ACE inhibitors
ACE inhibitors, hypertension and cardiovascular structure
ACE inhibitors and atherosclerosis
ACE inhibitors in diabetes
ACE inhibitors, reperfusion injury and cardiac arrhythmias
ACE inhibitors and vascular injury following therapeutic

Michael Schachter MRCP is a Senior Research Fellow in the
Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at St.
Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. His basic research
interests are principally in the cellular and molecular aspects of
vascular smooth muscle function and growth. This involves
investigations not only on new drugs, but also on well-
established compounds which are still poorly understood. He
is also interested in the practical implications of prescribing
policies. Dr Schachter is involved in undergraduate and
postgraduate training, both for doctors and pharmacists. He
has published widely in clinical, pharmacological and
biochemical journals and has contributed to several books.
