Aaron Sisson is a coal-miner who abandons his wife and children and, with nothing but a flute and a little money, sets out in search of a life of greater personal integrity. His pilgrimage of self-discovery takes him to the heart of Bohemian London and later to the vivid environment of Florence.
In Aaron's Rod, as in most of Lawrence's novels, there is a marked autobiographical strain. The book is spiced with amusing satirical portraits of the people whom Aaron meets, and whose conduct and outlook influence him. Lawrence, who was a brilliant and merciless mimic, nearly became involved in a series of libel cases when it was noticed that these portraits were thinly disguised caricatures of his own acquaintances in England and Italy.
