How to use this book
A Writer's Reference has been carefully designed to save you time. As you can see, the book lies flat, making it easy to consult while you are revising and editing a draft. And the book's ten section dividers will lead you — in most cases very quickly — to the information you need.
Here's how the book works. Let's say you have a question about the proper use of commas between items in a series. Your first step is to scan the main menu on the page opposite this one, where you will find the comma listed as the first item under Punctuation (PI). Next flip the book open to the section divider tabbed P for Punctuation. Now consult the detailed menu on the back of the section divider for the precise subsection (Pl-c) and the exact page number.
Until you have become familiar with the organization of A Writer's

A Writer's Reference has been carefully designed to save you time. As you can see, the book lies flat, making it easy to consult while you are revising and editing a draft. And the book's ten section dividers will lead you — in most cases very quickly — to the information you need.
Here's how the book works. Let's say you have a question about the proper use of commas between items in a series. Until you have become familiar with the organization of A Writer's
Reference, you may on occasion need to consult the index at the back of the book. For example, you may not at first realize that the issue of who versus whom appears in G3 (Problems with pronouns). The index entry will take you straight to the pages you're looking for.
One section sure to be frequently consulted deserves special mention: Wl, Glossary of usage. When you are in doubt about the correct use of a particular word (such as affect and effect, among and between, or hopefully), flip the book open to the section divider tabbed W (Word Choice) and consult the alphabetically arranged glossary for the word in question.
A Writer's Reference is meant to be consulted as the need arises. We suggest that you keep it conveniently available on your desk or next to your word processor as a ready resource. Vissza
