One of the most original and penetrating philosophers of all time, Spinoza is also one of the clearest and easiest to understand as a whole. In the "Theologico-Political Treatise" Spinoza presents an eloquent plea for religious liberty and demonstrates that true religion consists in the practice of simple piety, independent of philosophical speculation. Anticipating to a large extent the methods of the modern rationalists, he examines the Bible in some detail and shows that freedom of thought and speech is consistent with the religious life. In the unfinished "Political Treatise" he develops a theory of government founded on common consent.
Together with the companion volume On the Improvement of the Understanding, The Ethics, and Selected Letters (Dover 20250-X) this constitutes an unabridged reprint of the famous Bohn (Chief Works) edition and contains all of Spinoza's most important works and a generous selection of letters to contemporary philosophers and scientists.
Unabridged republication from the 1883 Bohn edition. Introduction by R. H. M. Elwes. Bibliographical Note by Francesco Cor-dasco. xxxiv -f 387pp. 5s/8 x 8- Paper bound.
