It is aJso directed at those with a theological or historical focus on religion and it is written with the generál readerin mind. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of Max Weber to the sociological understanding of religion and an attempt is made throughoutto show the relevance of 'classical' sociology for the study of contemporary religion. Among the issues covered are the problems involved in a sociological treatment of religion and the way in which these emerged in the early writers; the conceptual basis on which different types of Christian organization have been distinguished and their development in recent sociology of religion; and the theoretical concerns which underpin the analysis of Protestantism and Capitaíism. There are chapters on charisma, on religion and social change, and on secularization. A final chapter assesses the restatement of 'classical' theory in the sociology of knowledge approach to the study of contemporary religion. There are extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter which provide further reading on the topics covered. e_ Sociology Heinemann Educational Books ISBN 0 435 82411 2 Vissza
