A Shakespeare Glossary is a justly famous aid to the study of Shakespeare.
Compiled originally by C. T. Onions, one of the editors of the Oxford
English Dictionary, it concentrates on elucidating those words whose
senses or connotations would be unfamiliar to a modern reader; dialect
forms, idioms, and colloquial phrases receive special attention. Original
in many of its explanations, and illuminating in its definitions, the

have been altered; earlier problems have been resolved. Since then,
moreover, two highly accurate, computer-based concordances of Shake-
speare's works have appeared, making every occurrence of each word
immediately accessible for investigation and comparison. The benefits
of all these advances are incorporated in Professor Eagleson's revised
and enlarged third edition of the Glossary.
Robert D. Eagleson is Associate Professor of Early English Literature
and Language at the University of Sydney.
