Picasso's extraordináry, almost magicai capacity to work with a variety of materials and transform them into art has dazzled his critics since the first years of the century. This collection of critical and personal reactions to Picasso at every stage of his career provides a remarkable account of the many innovations and changes of direction which baffled his contemporaries. His ways of working and his attitudes to his own art are alsó revealed in his conversations and in the letters and statements of the friends who were closest to him. A Picasso Anthology contains a wide rangé and variety of responses to Picasso and his art, concentrating on discussions of work that was recent at the time of writing. There are essential passages from books by his close friends, including Apollinaire, Cocteau, Roland Penrose, his dealer Kahnweiler and his secretary Sabartés; there is an important body of Catalan and Spanish criticism, which emphasizes his ties with his native country; reactions from English critics, including Roger Fry, John Middleton Murry, Wyndham Lewis, Herbert Read and John Richardson; a remarkable collection of Russian criticism of his cubist work, written in the years just before the Revolution; and Czech, Danish and Italian articles, as well as mainstream works from Francé and Germany. The majority of these are translated into English or reprinted here for the first time. The 55 illustrations include reproductions of many of the most important works of art that are discussed in the articles or that were reproduced in the originál publications, as well as documentary photographs. As a retrospective of Picasso criticism, this book adds greatly to our understanding of the artist and the man, and by showing how his reputation developed, it offers new insight into the relationship between Picasso's work and the evolution of critical enquiry in the twentieth century. Marilyn McCully teaches art history at Princeton University. She has written and lectured widely on Picasso and on twentieth-century art, and was responsible for the exhibition and catalogue Els Quatre Gats: Art in Barcelona around 1900 at the Princeton Art Museum in 1978. Her book Art and Life in Barcelona in the 1890S is to be published in 1982. On the cover: Picasso's drawing of awoman with a dog, from the letter of 25 October 1900from Carles Casagemas to Ramon Reventós (see p. 27). Collection Jácint Reventós i Conti, Barcelona. Vissza
