Since the publication in 1931 of his first novel, Hatter's Castle, A. J. Cronin has established himself as one of the most prolific and popular novelists of the twentieth century —a writer whose works have been favorably compared with those of Dickens, Balzac and Hardy. Complete in this volume are three of A. J. Cronin s most representative and outstanding works.
THE NORTHERN LIGHT
Henry Page was a man who believed in the greatness of his country, a small-town newspaper editor and publisher who tried to make the Northern Light a force for good in the lives of its readers. When the head of a powerful newspaper syndicate offered to buy his paper, he was disturbed. Why should the owner of the Gazettey a sex and scandal sheet with a circulation in the millions, be interested in a homey, provincial newspaper? THE NORTHERN LIGHT
Henry Page was a man who believed in the greatness of his country, a small-town newspaper editor and publisher who tried to make the Northern Light a force for good in the lives of its readers. When the head of a powerful newspaper syndicate offered to buy his paper, he was disturbed. Why should the owner of the Gazettey a sex and scandal sheet with a circulation in the millions, be interested in a homey, provincial newspaper? The answer is soon known, and Page's refusal to sell out precipitates a desperate struggle to defend not only his property, but also his beliefs and the lives of the people he loves — people like Cora, the "common" girl with a loving heart, who is trying to forget the shameful secret in her past; her brilliant husband, David, haunted by his own fears; and Henry's wife, Alice, afraid that she will lose her home and her position. As Henry Page struggles for his integrity and his life against the terrible pressures brought to bear on him, the reader is caught up in his stubborn refusal to accept defeat, and swept along on a rushing tide of emotions and events that culminate in a breath-taking climax.

THE GREEN YEARS
The Green Years begins the story of young Robert Shannon, one of A. J. Cronin's most memorable characters; and his great-grandfather, the irresponsible, amorous, boasting and penniless old Cadger Gow. It is the story of the development into manhood of a sensitive, trusting boy beset from every side with crushing difficulties. It is a book that particularly reveals the author's sympathetic understanding of human frailties and emotions and his burning sincerity in portraying the passions that motivate people in their sublime and ridiculous endeavors. As Robert Shannon strives against staggering odds to salvage his life, every reader will recall comparable trials and crises from his own experience. In the words of Orville Prescott in the New York Times, The Green Years is "serene and forthright, a book that arouses interest and commands respect."
SHANNON'S WAY
Shannon's Way finds Robert Shannon in his early twenties, a young doctor who has put his keen interest in medical research ahead of everything else in life. Burning with the painful ambition of a silent and retiring nature, longing in his poverty and obscurity to astound the world, Robert hopes to find the explanation for epidemics of influenza in the British Isles. His aim is to isolate the bacillus causing the epidemic, to check its relation to undulant fever, and to develop a preventive vaccine. Hampered on every side by unfair treatment, by outmoded equipment and even the lack of the necessities of life, he is content merely to exist so he may continue his glorious experiments—an existence complicated by the beautiful'jean Law, first as his student, later as his inspiration. To read this exultant novel is a heart-stirring and richly rewarding experience.
