Its object was to remind us of the history we once knew and thus enable us to get more fun out of looking at our surroundings as we travel around Britain. The object was fulfilled because not only has the book been selling widely, both in case-bound and paperback editions, but it was warmly praised by the critics and the tourist industry. The British Holiday and Travel Association wondered 'why one has had to wait so long for this simple brainwave of a book'. Ronald Hamilton has now performed the same service for visitors and holidaymakers in Francé. His Holiday History of Francé follows the same plan as Now I Remember: the rulers and régimes of Francé, from Hugh Capet to General de Gaulle, are grouped under the principal architectural periods. These periods are illustrated by examples of the architecture ofthe time; a pictorial representation of each ruler; a thumbnail character sketch and a short history of each reign. Further identification of the period is provided by examples of dress, domestic fúrniture and works of art.
