This volume is the second of a two-volume History o^ the United States now revised and extended to include the election of President Nixon. It represents^ a collaborative effort by an Englishman and an American to study American history from its beginnings to the present day. With each supplying to the other an understanding of naturally different ^ points of view, the result is an interpretation of men;'| trends and events that often differs from that usually® found in briefer histories of the United States.
The authors are convinced that the history of the United States cannot be divorced from that of the rest of the world and have paid especial attention to the place of the United States in the pattern of world ¦ events. The authors are convinced that the history of the United States cannot be divorced from that of the rest of the world and have paid especial attention to the place of the United States in the pattern of world ¦ events. But because they are equally certain that America is American and must be understood on its own terms they have given most attention to the development of its own distinctive way of life.
Aimed at providing readers on both sides of the Atlantic - and all over the world - with a fresh understanding of the American past, this history places more than usual emphasis on the growth of American ideas, in politics, the arts, religion and society.
Here, in relatively small compass, is a survey of the^ American spirit and mind as it has matured over three centuries of swift and complex development!^
The cover, designed by Germane Facetti, shows a detail from 'Pigeon's Egg Head' by George Catlin, in the Berenson Collection
