Conrad Totman The author is Professor Emeritus at Yale University. He gained a Ph.D. in Asian history at Harvard in 1964, and later pursued a career teaching Japanese history at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Northwestern and Yale universities. He retired from Yale in 1997. His previous books include Japan Before Perry: A Short History (1981) The Green Archipelago: Forestry in Pre-Industrial Japan (1989, 1998) and Early Modern Japan (1993).
