A Historical Phonology of the Kashubian Dialects of Polish offers a structural description of the main stages of phonemic development of a large dialectal group of which the major part is now extinct while the surviving minor part is extremely differentiated. Since the historical data are rather few in number, the methodological approach is mainly retrospective and based on internál reconstruction. The analysis is carried out consistently in terms of distinctive features. A great deal of attention is given to the reconstruction and analysis of the olfi Polish-Pomeranian system of the laté 12th century treated as the starting point of autonous Kashubian evolution. The analysis is carried out consistently in terms of distinctive features. A great deal of attention is given to the reconstruction and analysis of the olfi Polish-Pomeranian system of the laté 12th century treated as the starting point of autonous Kashubian evolution. The attempt is made to describe as exhaustively as possible the formation of the Kashubian dialectal group, first as opposed to other Lekhitic Pomeranian dialects, and then as opposed to other, i.e. non-Kashubian, Polish dialects. Though the author focusses her attention on the genuine Kashubian developments, the first chapters contain somé suggestions concerning the solution of isolated problems of Old Polish and of Lekhitic phonemic evolution. Professor Topolinska has tried, as far as possible, to determine which tendencies have been of decisive importance for the diachronical restructuring of the Kashubian pattern. The analysis of the Kashubian data leads to somé considerations of more generál interest, e.g. the discussion of a situation where the unique difference between two patterns consists in the hierarchical order of their distinctive features.
