In this book, the author deals, mainly from a spectroscopic standpoint, with the determination of dissociation energies. While it is not possible to give a complete account of the theory and practice of molecular spectroscopy in a limited space, the author has aimed at including that part of the theory which is relevant to his subject. Dr. Gaydon also deals with the determination of dissociation energies by thermal methods, and by controlled electron impact.
The most important alterations in the revised edition are in the last four chapters, which have been largely rewritten. In the list of numerical data, of the original 250 molecules for which values were recommended, over a third have been altered to a greater or lesser extent. The chapters on the dissociation energies of nitrogen and carbon monoxide and related molecules have been largely revised to include a discussion of the spate of new papers on them.
