PENGUIN BOOKS
A Farewell to Arms

First published in 1929, this is the story of an American ambulance officer serving with the Italian Arditi during the 1914-18 War. The novel is divided into five parts, each describing a different phase of his adventures. He falls in love v/ith an English nurse; he is wounded; there is the interlude from the battle, and romance of his convalescence: then on returning to the front he finds himself part of the disorganized retreat, and the pace of this intensely exciting episode increases in the final section after he has rejoined the girl he loves. The story is told in the now-famous terse Hemingway style, combined with tough and dry dialogue. This is one of the greatest novels of the War, contrasting as it does the hero's bitter feelings about the fighting with his passion for the woman who bears his child.
'A Farewell to Arms is more than a realistic war novel. It is a notable addition to modern fiction, showing how poignancy and horror... Tovább

'A Farewell to Arms is more than a realistic war novel. It is a notable addition to modern fiction, showing how poignancy and horror can be heightened by leaving out instead of heaping on details. It is a masterpiece of imaginative omissions, and the end is quite unforgettable in its pathos' - Daily Telegraph
