MAY 10, 1984 - just an ordinary Thursday in Israel - was given a special significance when, in accordance with a prearranged plan, fifty-five top photographers fanned out over the entire country and from well before dawn until almost midnight recorded with their cameras one whole day in the life of the Israelis. Nothing so intensive or extensive had been attempted in Israel before. Beginning with the deep purple of sunrise over the sea of Galilee, every unfolding moment of that otherwise normál Thursday was monitored in a highly ambitious photojournalistic feat. Somé 40,000 photographs in all were taken, from which were culled the 319 that appear in this book. The result bnngs the country and the people into focus in an entirely new way. Here is the Israel behind the headlines and the worn clichés. These images are not picture postcards, though the land is shown in all its austere beauty - the mountains, the verdant valleys, the deserts with their oases, the ancient ruins and the modern architecture. The photographers explored not only the big cities - Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa among them - but the new towns and settlements, the kibbutzim and the moshavim. The emphasis, however, is on people and on the spontaneous. Jews, Arabs and Christians, elders and infants, soldiers and civilians, ballet dancers and housewives, Talmudic scholars, celebrities and shopkeepers crowd the pages. They study, they jog, they shop, they swim, they patrol the bordér, they farm, they weave, they celebrate, they mourn; and whether the reader meets twilight in Jerusalem, near the Valley of the Cross, or winds down at a Bedouin café near Holit, he too will feel part of this day in May.
