They did it to the Soviets, they did it to the Americans, and now those prize-winning fly-in, fly-out photogs ate going to do it to California. Photographers from 15 countries will snap the daylights out of our Golden State.
— San Francisco Chronicle
In a single 24-hour period, 100 newspaper and magazine photographers from around the world prowled the state and shot more than 3,000 rolls of film in a $1.4-million effort to capture A Day in the Life of California.
—Los Angeles Times
From the first flicker of light over the Sierras to the last stab of neon in Hollywood, A Day in the Life of California is all on film now.
— Oakland. Tribune
For professional photographers, an invitation to participate in a Day in the Life project is like being selected for the Olympics. For professional photographers, an invitation to participate in a Day in the Life project is like being selected for the Olympics. Indeed, the skills required to produce the book in your hands are similar to those demanded from an athlete in the pentathlon. Within the finite dimension of a 24-hour day, 100 of the world's most talented photojournalists test their luck, stamina, technical skill, agility and creative judgment against the unforgiving logistics of unfamiliar terrain.
Seven times in the past, photographer Rick Smolan and Editor David Cohen, who together created the award-winning series of photography books back in 1981 with the publication of A Day in the Life of Australia, have challenged their colleagues to capture the texture and rhythm of a unique location on film. In the spring of 1988, after completing photographic odysseys to Spain and the Soviet Union, their Day in the Life team returned to America and decided to focus their lenses on the country's most populous, dynamic and controversial state: California.
Why California? "Because California is American society in microcosm," says Smolan. "For anyone curious about where America is heading in the future, all you need to do is take a look at California today."
In A Day in the Life of California you will ride on police patrol with New York Daily News photographer Monica Almeida through the gritty sprawl of central Los Angeles, climb a rocky escarpment in the Sierra Nevada with adventure photographer Galen Rowell, explore mist-shrouded coves along California's "Lost Coast" with the Hartford Courant's Bradley Clift and follow Patrick Tehan of the Orange County Register onto the tarmac of Beale Air Force Base for a peek at America's most sophisticated spy plane.
A Day in the Life of California is a scrapbook of an extraordinary state compiled by photojournalism's gold medalists. The hundreds of color and black-and-white pictures that follow were chosen from nearly 115,000 images shot on April 29, 1988.
You will be guided through A Day in the Life of California by maps indicating when and where each photograph was taken.
