THE WORLD OF ART
A Concise History of Watercolours
Graham Reynolds 1 60 plates 31 in color !^
This is the first book in English to survey the entire history of watercolour as a self-sufficient mediunn in all the prominent schools of Western painting. Mr Reynolds outlines the distinguishing characteristics of watercolour and examines such important forerunners as the illuminated manuscript. The sixteenth-century origins of the technique in Italy and Germany are traced, and also the important developments in Holland, France and Switzerland during the eighteenth century. The special contribution made by the British School in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, notably in the work of J. R. Cozens, Girtin, Cotman and Turner, thus falls into perspective in its European context. The advance of Romanticism gave some impetus to the greater and more expressive use of watercolour in France, Holland, Germany and America, and, of the Impressionists, Cézanne in particular... The special contribution made by the British School in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, notably in the work of J. R. The advance of Romanticism gave some impetus to the greater and more expressive use of watercolour in France, Holland, Germany and America, and, of the Impressionists, Cézanne in particular expressed in watercolour ideas which he was groping, sometimes less effectively, to convey in his oil painting. Most of the cross-currents of twentieth-century painting have had their counterpart in watercolour and its conflict with older traditions is the theme of the final chapter, which brings the story down to the 1960s. The author has been in charge of the national collection of watercolours in the Victoria and Albert Museum for more than twenty years, and in this book provides an invaluable guide to the work of some four hundred artists who have used the medium.
