HELEN HUNT JACKSON A CENTURY OF DISHONOR
THE EARLY CRUSADE FOR INDIAN REFORM
"Helen Hunt Jackson's moving A Century of Dishonor Imay] be designated as the Uncle Tom's Cabin of the humanitarian crusade designed to restore basic rights to America's natives. No other book had such an impact on the tender consciences of the American people, and none accomplished so much on behalf of a sizable minority. "Century's central thesis was that the United States had followed a consistently outrageous Indian policy in defiance of basic principles of justice and of the laws of all nations. The book described Indian maltreatment from the period of the American Revolution, focusing upon the Delawares and Chero-kees, and then went on to deplore the more recent sufferings of the Sioux, Nez Percés and Cheyennes. Mrs. Jackson's book was less a systematic history than a record of the awkward relations between the federal government and numerous of the most important tribes. She found it startlingly easy to unearth a succession of broken treaties and many examples of inhumane treatment of the nation's 300,000 Indians."—Andrew f. rolle, in the Introduction
"We can point to her as eloquent evidence that at one period of our history a large body of Americans began to care, a large body •began to be ashamed. And if her writings lacked constructive qualities they were not devoid of vision."—allan nevins Vissza
