THE LAND
The country known as Iran, i.e. Aryan, meaning Land of the Aryans, has long been known to the
west as Persia, a name derived from Pars or Fars, one of the country's southern provinces.
It is a land of sharp contrasts: high mountains, deep valleys, large plains, and extensive deserts.
Iran is a vast country and lies in the Middle East, forming the western part of Asia and the eastern

kilometres. Its area is also roughly equal to the combined areas of France, Britain, Germany, Italy,
Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and England.
The Iranian plateau, which covers the best part of Iran, may be described as a triangle set between two
depressions, the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf in the south. This triangle is bounded
by mountains rising round a central depression, an extensive desert region formed by the bed of a
dried-up ocean. The western mountains, the Zagros range, runs from Vissza
