What is a doll? Artists from around the world attempt to answer that question with contemporary interpretations of this beloved, eternal object— from representational to abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism. The works have been chosen by the esteemed doll artist Akira Blount, who has promoted and encouraged experimentation and innovation in the field.
The dolls are made from every conceivable material, including cloth, polymer clay, felt and other fibers, ceramic, wood, porcelain, gourds, beads, wire work,
papier-mache, resin, and everyday items.
Blount incorporates vines, twigs, and carved wood in her fabric figures; with their expressionless faces and closed eyes, they appear absorbed by inner worlds. Marlaine Verhelst fashions porcelain puppets that look like they could have
