China after Mao — what will it be hke? China today in the United Nations — what is it like? China during the upheaval of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution — what was it like?
In this revised edition of his classic work, O. Edmund Clubb examines developments in China since 1964 when the first ghm-merings of the "cultural revolution" that was to become the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution were being seen. In this revised edition of his classic work, O. Mr. Clubb examines that historic episode and shows in detail how, despite Mao's dictum that the gun should never be permitted to command the Party, the hard fact was that at the end of the Revolution, in October, 1968, the Army truly dominated the China scene.
Mr. Clubb pursues the account to October 1971 when China won entry into the United Nations, and examines the salient features of "Mao's China" as it exists today. China will change with the passing of Mao and his rernaining Old Comrades, Mr. Clubb concludes, but the China of the future will still bear their imprint.
O. Edmund Clubb occupied many posts in China in the course of twenty years with the United States Foreign Service in Asia. He served in such important centers as Shanghai, Hankow, Nanking, Chungking, and Mukden, and such remote places as Lanchow and Urumchi. He was the last U.S. Consul General in Peking (1947-1950). From 1950 to 1952 he was Director of the Office of Chinese Affairs in the Department of State.
